Added a CITM reference sheet. This will be a glossary for all things technical that's relating to leadership skills.

The term that stood out for me here most was 'strategic underachievement'. You ever follow a favourite athlete? There's a common trend where during their rookie to intermediate years, you'd find that they're more energised and reliant on their athleticism. I feel as though I've somewhat done that in my trade, eager to prove my worth, I found myself going all in for every InfoTech battle that I could gather as soon as I've met efficiency in my approach at hitting targets in general. While I did reach many of my goals with a mix of a lucky break in having healthy encouragement around, I eventually met a wall. Having all that pride for consistency, as you could probably tell from my previous entries, started to lose its prestige because life is more of a juggling act and prioritisation sometimes inevitably results in underachieving other aspects and that I should probably work on giving myself a kind reminder that 'it's okay'. This one's certainly gone to my favourites. It's a fresh take on time management and you can really tell that the author was quite influenced with stoicism and presumably a bit of taoism for its emphasis on nature's natural flow with time. It's good aid for the leadership style I'm looking to practice for myself because time's finitude should ultimately be taken into account when looking to decide which track should be valued most.

Is it better to specialise or be jack of all trades?

I believe in both. It’s necessary that I specialise in my craft and respect the depth of the knowledge + skills required to do well for it. But similarly, knowing enough about other things and at the very least capturing the soft skills down is absolutely mandatory in my mind.

A soft skill that I am very proud about in particular’s my genuine ability to be calm under the unknown, stress and disagreements. After a long battle with my temper years ago now, I consider this to be my biggest achievement. It’s a bonus that I’ve now found my voice as well. I have never seen a top competitor in any industry that doesn’t have the ability to be calm when it counts and now I can say with lived experience that it truly does maximise your visual when actively wearing the analytical hat.

I’ve finished the Harry Potter Books and got a pretty solid rank on my favourite game. I always try to abstractly relate even the hobbies on my tech craft and these things are definitely cognitively productive that keeps me sharp.

We’re in the Information Age and it’s a low hanging fruit to pick it when it comes to a lot of how much damage it’s done for us socially. But the advantage’s that we can somewhat control and teach the algorithm what it should be showing us. See, I think Information Diet is interesting because it’s what defines perspective in my mind aye. I’ve realised this coming from an occupation that allowed opportunities for me to interact with different people from a variety of backgrounds and authority. Down to the banter and what they notice about you tends to be relevant to what I suspect we mostly have to think about to try be as efficient as possible in the responsibilities held in our domain.

It makes sense, right? Think of say, a hairdresser. If she does that 40 hours a week, naturally when she see someone walking on the street, she’d notice the details of the haircut. I actually even recall asking this question to a mate from that industry and jokingly, she told me that “There’s just some people that walk by, and I look at his hair and think ‘wow someone’s definitely botched that one up’!”

As a tech person, I notice people’s devices or scour for the branding at least if I don’t recognise it. I sometimes even play a game where I try to guess the year it was manufactured. I even catch myself now looking around when I’m in an unfamiliar building, trying to figure out the infrastructure of their technology.

We are truly what we consume, I’m convinced. So while I believe that being mindful on what to keep and cut out from the Info Diet, I’d argue that it’s important to recognise some of the benefits you might be getting from things we already consume. We just need to be able to apply it to something productive I think. I believe that our brains are smart enough to critically create analogies from our interests to apply it productively. I just have to ensure that I’m attentive that there will be dimensions that I’ll inevitably miss. It’s important to strike balance between being confident with what I know and my logic, while allowing myself to be reflective of other’s perspective.

Technology use may be associated with a lower risk of dementia. Well, the article’s made some good points. It’s very well possible that the people in the study just happen to already have resilient brains. I personally have doubts that mindless scrolling is that beneficial because correlation doesn’t always mean causation. We don’t know what these participants do with their technology devices. Overall, it’s good reminder to me that it’s not a bad idea to try mitigate and improve our worse decisions.

From a Technology Leadership perspective, I’ve been pondering about the Treaty of Waitangi Bill and what I can learn from how the New Zealand Parliament dealt with it.

It seems to me that human factor’s still considered and not just the focus on economic growth. This reminded me of when a technical savvy cybersecurity professional comes in with the hopes of hardening all attack surfaces and engineering the infrastructure into its maximum potential, only to be met by other logistics like Costs and Convenience. Security is doomed to always go against Convenience but the gist of it’s that sometimes we can probably get away with it if the likelihood of the risk raised to get mitigated is low. It’s situational for sure and I imagine that sometimes applying something like a 2FA to all internal login prompts might cause some resentment. But sometimes we just have to bite the bullet to keep people safe.

And whether it’s the Parliament, Technology Leadership or Life; We should never let anyone weaponise our anger. A cool, calm and collected fair reasoning must be carried with purposeful grit.

Troubleshooting requires lots of thinking so naturally it made me wonder. Does Diet affect cognitive performance? I think so. Taking care of the fuel that goes into your body matters and should definitely affect you mentally. This doesn’t however suggest that the cream of the crop all have the best diet and health but it does make you wonder if the one’s who don’t would’ve performed even better than they already did. Whatboutisms, then pointing at an elite isn’t a convincing arguement in my mind because the point of all this’ about the regular person.

Think of someone with elite genetics from extreme poverty in a sport like boxing. Yes, he’d probably do pretty good but can you imagine if he had the investment of someone from the first world? Better nutrition, healthier environments and top conditioning coaches. He’d even be better, right? I see cognitive talents the same way. Just because someone can be better than most with one hand behind their back, doesn’t mean that untying that wouldn’t be better. So I try to be mindful with it and personally, I certainly feel sharper when I eat the right stuff. It’s the attempt that matters! If I can’t be this technology behemoth, I should at least try get ahead with my temperament so I’m less likely to blunder and maximise sensible decisions specially when dealing with a plethora of personalities.

My IT clients tend to come from a plethora of cultural backgrounds and sometimes I enjoy learning how to say ‘Hello’ in their native toungue so I can greet them with it when they inevitably re-visit me for a future computer dilemma. Which leads me to Monolingual Benefits! cos often we talk about all the benefits of being bilingual or a polyglot. Admittedly, I am coming from a perspective of being one of the lucky ones that can speak 2 languages with fluency. Some of the advantages in mind's that once you specialise into one "framework", you'd be able to articulate yourself better and quicker with an extensive vocabulary. Each language has so much complexity and nuances. There's undercurrents that could vary even when it's from just one language. For instance, think of how different a stereotypical American carries the same language compared to a general Kiwi! Carry yourself with a bit of blatant swagger and the sarcasm behind that is recognised in the USA while in NZ, that wouldn't quite be a good idea cos you might just turn into the Tall Poppy.

An example I could think of's when you visualise a teenager say "I want to be President". For Americans, it's more likely to come across inspiring but I would be a little gobsmacked if a New Zealand teenager could get the same encouragement with saying that "I want to be Prime Minister". Now obviously this is all generic! People are complex and can't just over generalise.

That said, there's many layers stacked up like that in language that can only really be noticed thoroughly if you dive into full immersion long enough. So, it's not always so bad if you feel like it's a bit late to pick-up another language because you can just water what you've got going already. Words are beautiful! It's filled with revelry.

🌊 8th of April, Martes

In InfoTech, I’ve supported a good range of people from different generations and one thing that stands out for me at the moment’s the Gen Z Lingo. Would that be relevant to how my IT comms style evolves? I had a lengthy call with my sister and it's stupendously eerie how different the flow and vocabulary tends to be when it's someone who's got it naturally. It's often caricatured but it's legit its own 'dialect' down to how the sentences are chopped up and all. And I'm not just basing this off a sample size of 1, no. There's almost this TikTok voice or wherever the flow's from and it's genuinely fascinating because it makes you wonder whether seeing things in bursts like that would be essential.

I believe that the Communication Approach that we wear is a window to how we are inclined to think. A reflection of your perspective, as you will. I think I'll use some of the vocab as tongue in cheek cos at the end of the day, being adaptive doesn't entirely mean that I'd sacrifice my authenticity. That's logical! No Cap

Part of the fun in IT Consulting’s the mild code-switching. I tend to enjoy dealing with different personalities and profiles since it’s electrifying to adapt communication style when supporting technology according to contex specially when there’s incidents left and right. It adds a layer to the problem solving! That all said, I’ve been a pretty decent team-player today in my mind and that’s always important. But I think I shouldn’t really over adapt either because that will just confuse my thinking. A good balance of being true to my own while trying to meet them in the middle’s worked quite alright for me.

I’ve always found it puzzling throughout the years, how I could apply assertiveness while having the warmth that’s expected from me by the loved ones. But I think a trick that works for me’s ensuring I have an efficient self-care because having a strong ground keeps me as ready as I can be for anything that I wouldn’t expect.
